Before start:

Wigwam is an MPC self-custodial wallet, which means only you have access to your crypto funds. Your passkey is a key part of your seed phrase and secures your assets on the blockchain.

For security reasons:

  • We do not store your passkey on our servers and it is stored only on your device.
  • You cannot reset or retrieve your passkey via email because we do not have access to it.
How to recover a passkey:

f you're experiencing issues recovering your wallet using a passkey in the Wigwam app, follow this guide to troubleshoot and resolve the problem. Recovery problems are often tied to mismatched device settings or outdated app versions. Here's what you need to know and do:

If you have the same device: make sure of the following

  1. Same device
Ensure you are using the same device you used when originally creating your Wigwam wallet.

  2. Same Google/Apple account
You must be logged into the same Google or Apple account that was used during the original wallet creation process.

  3. Latest version of the app
Check that you're using the most up-to-date version of Wigwam.
Visit the App Store or Google Play Store.
If you see an Update button, click it to update the app.

  4. Backup files not deleted
Make sure you haven't manually deleted backup or app data from your device. This may prevent the recovery process from working.

  5. You have a stable internet connection that isn’t being blocked. Please try using a reliable VPN (if you live in a region where internet traffic is restricted) or turn off your VPN (if it’s unreliable or uses blocked IP addresses).
Troubleshooting steps

After verifying the above, try the following steps:

  1. Check your internet connection
Make sure you have a stable internet connection.
If you're in a region with restricted access, consider using a VPN (filter breaker) to ensure your IP is not being blocked by network providers or local security systems.

  2. Attempt wallet recovery
Try recovering your wallet using the passkey method again.

  3. Restart your device
  4. Reinstall the app
    If recovery still fails:
Delete the Wigwam app from your device.
Reinstall it from the official app store.
    Attempt the passkey recovery again.

  5. Try an alternative recovery method
If the issue continues, try using another available backup method (if previously set up) to restore your wallet.

For a new device: How to restore access to you passkey

Passkeys are not regular passwords — they are cryptographic keys securely stored in your system and used for passwordless login.
Whether you can restore them depends on where and how they were saved.
Below is a step-by-step guide for each major ecosystem.

If you use Apple (iCloud Keychain)

How it works:
Your passkeys are synced through iCloud Keychain.

Steps to restore:

  1. On your new Apple device, sign in with the same Apple ID.

  2. Go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Passwords and Keychain.

  3. Turn on Sync this iPhone/Mac (iCloud Keychain).

Once iCloud Keychain is enabled, all your saved passkeys will automatically appear on the new device.

If you use Google (Android / Chrome / Google Password Manager)

How it works:
Passkeys are stored in your Google Account and synchronized across devices.

Steps to restore:

  1. On your new device, sign in with the same Google Account.

  2. Make sure Autofill with Google or Password Manager sync is enabled:

    • Go to Settings → Google → Autofill → Autofill with Google.

  3. Check that Password and passkey sync is turned on.

Your passkeys will automatically sync and become available for login on your new device.

If you use Windows (Microsoft Account)

How it works:
Passkeys can be stored in Windows Hello or linked to your Microsoft Account.

Steps to restore:

  1. Sign in to your new Windows device with the same Microsoft Account.

  2. Go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.

  3. Make sure Windows Hello and Credential sync are enabled.

Your saved passkeys will sync and be restored automatically.

Important Notes
  • Passkeys cannot be viewed as text — they exist only as secure keys.

  • If you did not enable synchronization (iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or Microsoft Account), your passkeys will not transfer to the new device.

  • In that case, you will need to create new passkeys for each service manually.
